Clean School Bus USA

What is the Clean School Bus USA Project?
The Clean School Bus USA Project is a national project to reduce diesel exhaust from school buses. Pollution from diesel vehicles has health implications for everyone, especially children. By working together, we can reduce pollution from school buses, making sure that school buses are a safe and healthy way for children to get to school. Clean School Bus USA brings together partners from business, education, transportation, and public health organizations to work together for cleaner air.

EPA has awarded the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency in cooperation with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, a $500,000 Clean School Bus grant for retrofits of diesel exhaust systems and replacements of old school buses. In addition to administering this grant, LRAPA also facilitates the preparation of new grant applications for school districts in Lane County for participation in the Clean School bus USA Program. Currently there are three multi-district grant applications pending for the Clean School Bus USA 2005-2006 allocation of funds.

What are the Project Components?
Clean School Bus USA encourages school districts to reduce the health risks associated with exposure to diesel exhaust by:

  • Reducing school bus idling time.
  • Retrofitting current school bus fleets with new technologies and introducing cleaner fuels.
  • Replacing the oldest buses with new ones that meet stringent pollution control standards.

Who are the participants?
Over twenty-three school districts in Oregon are participating in the Clean School Bus USA program.

Recognition Program: The team has developed a logo and Clean Lane Fuel trademark for use with this project. Fleets or individuals using the clean fuels will be authorized to use the Clean Lane Fuel logo on promotional materials, vehicles and workplaces. Recognition license plate frames and bumper stickers will be supplied to participants as well. The recognition program will be transferred to LRAPA to continue implementation at the completion of the project.
